The Flavivirus Family

Hepatitis C virus is a Flavivirus, approximately 40-60 nm diameter with a lipid envelope surrounding a dense nucleocapsid. The positive sense RNA genome is an 11kb single stranded molecule. Other members of the Flavivirus family include Bovine Diarrhea virus (BVD), classical swine fever, Dengue Fever Virus and Yellow Fever Virus.

Easily culturable flaviviruses such as BVD can stand in for more complicated members of the family in certain antiviral drug testing regimens.

VIRAPUR has several assays developed using BVD as an indicator for the efficacy of potential flavivirus antivirals. Testing can be performed as a plaque inhibition assay or as a 96-well dish infectivity assay.
