Avian Influenza Viruses

Several High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza viruses (HPAI) of the H5N1 and H7N2 strains which were isolated from bird species in Vietnam, China, Cambodia and Turkey have been genetically modified to generate Low Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (LPAI) strains. In most instances the cleavage site HAO has been removed. These strains are intended for use in vaccines and assay development.

VIRAPUR has applied for the necessary USDA permits to grow and test these viruses in our state-of-the-art BSL-2 enhanced and BSL-3 areas. We can incorporate these viruses in your tests or screen drugs for antiviral activity. Antigen is also available. In the United States, only laboratories which have been inspected by the USDA (United states Department of Agriculture) for the appropriate containment equipment and procedures are given permits to receive and work with these agents. The USDA is involved because of the potential risk to the poultry industry.
